Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) causes visual impairment in the elderly. In non-neovascular AMD, studies involving human subjects have suggested potential involvement of aberrant lipid metabolism. However, there have been no reports on gene expression patterns in animal models of non-neovascular AMD with abnormal lipid metabolism such as apolipoprotein E knockout and human apolipoprotein E2 transgenic mice. Transcriptome analysis was performed using retinal pigment epithelium cells of apoE knockout and apolipoprotein E2 mice using microarray analysis.

PPARγ Pro12Ala and His447His polymorphisms and susceptibility to Alzheimer’s disease: a meta-analysis

We investigated whether Pro12Ala (C→G) and His447His (C→T) polymorphisms of the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ) gene are associated with susceptibility to Alzheimer’s disease (AD). We conducted a meta-analysis of the associations between the PPARγ Pro12Ala and His447His polymorphisms and AD in subjects. The meta-analysis was performed according to the apolipoprotein E (APOE) ɛ4 allele status. A total of eight studies were considered in our meta-analysis, comprising 2948 patients with AD and 3753 controls.

In the present study, the correlation of polymorphisms of the apolipoprotein E (apoE) gene with the susceptibility of essential hypertension (EH) was investigated. Single nucleotide polymorphisms of the apoE gene at the -491 A>T, +969 C>G, and +2836 G>A sites were determined in 221 non-EH individuals and 109 subjects with EH of Chinese Hui ethnicity using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis.

Study of immigrant populations may contribute to a better understanding of the epidemiology of diseases associated with the aging process. We examined the prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors, including apolipoprotein E (ApoE) polymorphism, in elderly subjects who were born in Japan, migrated to South Brazil and have lived in that region for over 40 years, versus a group of elderly, locally born Brazilians living in the same region. These Japanese subjects came to Brazil after World War II (1950-1960) from several Japanese cities, mainly Nagasaki, Kumamoto and Hokkaido.
