The development of human neoplasms can be provoked by exposure to one of several viruses. Burkitt lymphoma, cervical carcinoma, and hepatocellular carcinoma are associated with Epstein-Barr, human papilloma, and hepatitis B virus infections, respectively. Over the past three decades, many studies have attempted to establish an association between colorectal cancer and viruses, with debatable results. The aim of the present research was to assess the presence of BK polyomavirus (BKV) DNA and protein in colorectal cancer samples from patients in the Western Province of Saudi Arabia.

Models of logistic regression analysis, support vector machine, and back-propagation neural network based on serum tumor markers in colorectal cancer diagnosis

G., Models of logistic regression analysis, support vector machine, and back-propagation neural network based on serum tumor markers in colorectal cancer diagnosis, vol. 15, p. -, 2016.

We evaluated the application of three machine learning algorithms, including logistic regression, support vector machine and back-propagation neural network, for diagnosing congenital heart disease and colorectal cancer. By inspecting related serum tumor marker levels in colorectal cancer patients and healthy subjects, early diagnosis models for colorectal cancer were built using three machine learning algorithms to assess their corresponding diagnostic values.

P., Gutiérrez-Hurtado, I. A., Puebla-Pérez, A. M., Delgado-Saucedo, J. I., Figuera, L. E., Zúñiga-González, G. M., Gomez-Mariscal, K., Ronquillo-Carreón, C. A., and Gallegos-Arreola, M. P., Association between TNF-α-308G>A and -238G>A gene polymorphisms and TNF-α serum levels in Mexican colorectal cancer patients, vol. 15, p. -, 2016.

The objective of this study was to examine the association between TNF-α serum levels and -308G>A and -238G>A polymorphisms in the corresponding gene by comparing healthy subjects to colorectal cancer (CRC) patients from a Mexican population. Serum levels of TNF-α were found to significantly differ between CRC patients and controls (P = 0.001), but no relationship between the -308G>A and -238G>A polymorphisms and increased CRC risk was established (P > 0.05).

J., Association of Beclin-1 and microRNA-30a expression with the severity and treatment response of colorectal cancer, vol. 15, p. -, 2016.

We investigated the associations between Beclin-1 and microRNA-30a (miR-30a) expression and the severity and treatment response in colorectal cancer (CRC). Our sample size consisted of 139 CRC patients who were treated with surgery alone. Immunohistochemistry was used to investigate the expression and prognostic significance of Beclin-1 in CRC, while the weak expression of Beclin-1 in normal tissue was used as the basis for assessing tumors (control group). Real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction quantified miR-30a levels.

J., Guan, M., Yang, Z. H., and Jin, Z. D., Molecular analysis of MLH1 variants in Chinese sporadic colorectal cancer patients, vol. 15, p. -, 2016.

Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in mismatch repair genes, especially in the MLH1 gene, are closely associated with susceptibility to hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer. However, few relevant findings are available regarding the association between sporadic colorectal cancer (SCRC) and SNPs of MLH1 in Chinese patients. Therefore, the present study aimed to describe the pathogenic association between three important MLH1 polymorphisms and SCRC in the Chinese population.
