Z. G. Wang, Cui, W., Yang, L. F., Zhu, Y. Q., and Wei, W. H., Association of dietary intake of folate and MTHFR genotype with breast cancer risk, vol. 13, pp. 5446-5451, 2014.

We conducted a hospital-based case-control study to investigate the associations of dietary intake of folate and MTHFR C677T and A1298C polymorphisms with breast cancer in a Chinese population. A 1:1-matched case-control study was conducted. Two hundred and thirty patients who were newly diagnosed and histologically confirmed breast cancer and 230 controls were enrolled from Xinxiang Central Hospital. Folate intake was calculated by standard portion size and relative size for each food item in the questionnaire. Genotyping of MTHFR C677T and A1298C was performed by PCR-RFLP.

HIF1A gene Pro582Ser polymorphism and susceptibility to digestive tract cancers: a meta-analysis of case-control studies

J. Xu, Xu, L., Li, L. T., You, Q., and Cha, L. S., HIF1A gene Pro582Ser polymorphism and susceptibility to digestive tract cancers: a meta-analysis of case-control studies, vol. 13, pp. 5732-5744, 2014.

Many existing studies have demonstrated that common polymorphisms in the hypoxia inducible factor-1α (HIF-1A) may contribute to the development of digestive tract cancers, but individually published studies showed inconclusive results. This meta-analysis aimed to derive a precise estimation of the relationships between HIF1A Pro582Ser polymorphism and the risk of digestive tract cancers. We searched CISCOM, CINAHL, Web of Science, PubMed, Google Scholar, EBSCO, Cochrane Library, and CBM databases from inception through May 1, 2013.

H558R polymorphism in SCN5A is associated with Keshan disease and QRS prolongation in Keshan disease patients

S. Jiang, Li, F. L., Dong, Q., Liu, H. W., Fang, C. F., Shu, C., Cheng, H., Cui, J., Ma, H. X., Chen, D. Q., and Li, H., H558R polymorphism in SCN5A is associated with Keshan disease and QRS prolongation in Keshan disease patients, vol. 13, pp. 6569-6576, 2014.

Keshan disease (KSD), a potentially fatal cardiomyopathy, has very high incidence in some selenium-poor regions of China. KSD may be accompanied with a variety of arrhythmia, which is associated with mutations in the gene coding for cardiac voltage-gated sodium channel (SCN5A). The molecular mechanism of KSD is still largely obscure. We aimed to determine the association between the H558R polymorphism of SCN5A and KSD. We recruited 71 patients with KSD and 80 geographical region-matched control subjects in our study.

Association of a disintegrin and metalloproteinase 33 (ADAM33) gene polymorphisms with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in the Chinese population: A meta-analysis

D. D. Li, Guo, S. J., Jia, L. Q., and Wen, F. Q., Association of a disintegrin and metalloproteinase 33 (ADAM33) gene polymorphisms with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in the Chinese population: A meta-analysis, vol. 13, pp. 6391-6397, 2014.

Numerous studies have evaluated the association between polymorphisms of a disintegrin and metalloproteinase 33 (ADAM33) gene and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) risk; however, the results remain conflicting. The aim of this study was to investigate whether ADAM33S2 and -T1 polymorphisms are associated with susceptibility to COPD risk in the Chinese population. Publications addressing the association between ADAM33S2 or T1 polymorphisms and COPD risk were selected from the PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, CNKI, and Wanfang databases.

Role of inflammatory parameters in the susceptibility of cerebral thrombosis

X. F. Qi, Feng, T. J., Yang, P., Feng, H. Y., Zhang, P., Kong, L. Y., Liang, D. L., Li, P. F., Na, W., Li, Y. W., and Wang, Y., Role of inflammatory parameters in the susceptibility of cerebral thrombosis, vol. 13, pp. 6350-6355, 2014.

We aimed to investigate the association of inflammation-related genes such as IL-10, IL-6 and IL-1B with risk of ischemic stroke. We included 426 cases with ischemic stroke and 426 health controls from Xinxiang, China. Genomic DNA was extracted from the buffy coat layer of collected blood with the TIANamp blood DNA kit. Diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and smoking habits were associated with risk of ischemic stroke.

Isolation, characterization, and cross-transferability of microsatellite markers from the whitebacked planthopper (Sogatella furcifera)

L. Zhang, Li, G., He, G. C., Zhu, L. L., Qin, R., and Jing, S. L., Isolation, characterization, and cross-transferability of microsatellite markers from the whitebacked planthopper (Sogatella furcifera), vol. 13, pp. 6248-6252, 2014.

The whitebacked planthopper Sogatella furcifera (Horváth) (Hemiptera: Delphacidae) is one of the most harmful pests of rice. In this study, 18 polymorphic microsatellite markers were developed from S. furcifera genomic libraries using the fast isolation by amplified fragment length polymorphism of sequences containing repeat protocols. Microsatellite polymorphism was investigated using 32 individuals from one natural population.

Common polymorphisms in the HIF-1αgene confer susceptibility to digestive cancer: a meta-analysis

J. J. Xu, Zou, L. Y., Yang, L., He, X. L., and Sun, M., Common polymorphisms in the HIF-1αgene confer susceptibility to digestive cancer: a meta-analysis, vol. 13, pp. 6228-6238, 2014.

Recent evidence suggests that common functional polymorphisms in the hypoxia inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) gene may play an important role in the development and progression of digestive cancer, but individually published results are inconclusive. Our meta-analysis is aimed to derive a more precise estimation of the relationships between HIF-1αgene polymorphisms and digestive cancer risk.

MRJP microsatellite markers in Africanized Apis mellifera colonies selected on the basis of royal jelly production

R. S. Parpinelli, Ruvolo-Takasusuki, M. C. C., and Toledo, V. A. A., MRJP microsatellite markers in Africanized Apis mellifera colonies selected on the basis of royal jelly production, vol. 13, pp. 6724-6733, 2014.

It is important to select the best honeybees that produce royal jelly to identify important molecular markers, such as major royal jelly proteins (MRJPs), and hence contribute to the development of new breeding strategies to improve the production of this substance. Therefore, this study focused on evaluating the genetic variability of mrjp3, mrjp5, and mrjp8 and associated allele maintenance during the process of selective reproduction in Africanized Apis mellifera individuals, which were chosen based on royal jelly production.

H-FABP/HinfI polymorphisms were present in all the 6 populations.

Distribution of CXCR2 +1208 T/C gene polymorphisms in relation to opportunistic infections among HIV-infected patients in Limpopo Province, South Africa

A. Samie, Dzhivhuho, G. A., and Nangammbi, T. C., Distribution of CXCR2 +1208 T/C gene polymorphisms in relation to opportunistic infections among HIV-infected patients in Limpopo Province, South Africa, vol. 13, pp. 7470-7479, 2014.

Interleukin 8 (IL-8) is a chemokine produced by macrophages and other cell types, including epithelial cells, and its receptor is CXCR2. IL-8 plays an important role in the initiation and amplification of inflammatory diseases, including opportunistic infections. With the advent of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, opportunistic infections have become major health concerns. However, the role of host genetics on the occurrence of these infections has not been clearly defined.
