Glutathione-S-transferase P1 (GSTP1) is a critical enzyme of the phase II detoxification pathway. One of the common functional polymorphisms of GSTP1 is A→G at nucleotide 313, which results in an amino acid substitution (Ile105Val) at the substrate binding site of GSTP1 and reduces catalytic activity of GSTP1.

Numerous studies have evaluated the association between human leukocyte antigen (HLA) Cw*0602 polymorphism and psoriasis risk. However, the results have been inconsistent. We made a meta-analysis of the association between HLA-Cw*0602 polymorphism and psoriasis risk. Eighteen studies were retrieved, reporting a total of 3419 psoriasis patients and 3297 healthy controls. The associations between HLA-Cw*0602 polymorphism and psoriasis risk were estimated by pooled odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (95%CI).

Polymorphisms of the p53 gene have been associated with susceptibility to endometrial cancer. However, whether there is a specific association is still controversial. We investigated a possible association between p53 codon 72 polymorphism and endometrial cancer risk by conducting a meta-analysis. Publications addressing this association were selected from the Pubmed, Embase and CBM databases (up to January 2011). Data were extracted from the studies by two independent reviewers. The meta-analysis was performed using RevMan 5.0.25 and STATA 9.2 softwares.

Cytochrome P450 (CYP) 2C19 metabolizes arachidonic acid to biologically active epoxyeicosatrienoic acids, which significantly promote proliferation of cancer cells in vitro and in vivo. We looked for a possible association between human CYP2C19*3 gene polymorphism and breast cancer in the Chinese Han population. In a Chinese Han case-control study of breast cancer patients (N = 600) and age- and gender-matched healthy controls (N = 600), we investigated polymorphism in the CYP2C19 gene by PCR-RFLP analysis.

The multidrug resistance (MDR1) gene encodes a P-glycoprotein that plays a key role in drug bioavailability and response to drugs in different human populations. More than 50 SNPs have been described for the MDR1 gene. Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is considered an autosomal recessive hereditary disease, associated with a single gene named the Mediterranean fever gene (MEFV).

The dopamine D2 receptor (DRD2) is a crucial mediator for normal physiological processes. We cloned the pig DRD2 gene, investigated its distribution in tissues and identified polymorphisms by RT-PCR, quantitative real-time PCR and direct sequencing. Two Yorkshire pigs from Guangdong Academy of Agricultural Sciences (Guangzhou, China) were selected to clone the gene and investigate its expression; 16 individuals from four pig breeds (Yorkshire, Landrace, small-ear spotted, and Xinchang) were used to scan the variations.

Several studies have investigated the association between Lys751Gln polymorphism in the xeroderma pigmentosum group D (XPD) gene and risk of head and neck cancer; however, the published results are conflicting. We conducted a meta-analysis that comprised 15 published case-control studies examining the association of head and neck cancer risk with XPD Lys751Gln polymorphism in different populations, based on the data identified in Medline up to November 2010. Odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were used to assess the strength of the association.

Glutathione S-transferase (GST) protects cells against oxidative stress. We evaluated the effect of genetic polymorphisms of the GST gene family on the risk of developing type-2 diabetes mellitus and on glycemic control. We also investigated the effects of smoking combined with these polymorphisms on type-2 diabetes mellitus risk. We enrolled 100 type-2 diabetes mellitus patients and 100 healthy controls matched for age, gender and origin, from the Sinai area of Egypt. Fasting serum glucose, HbA1c and lipid profiles were determined.

Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is an endothelial cell-specific mitogen involved in a number of pathologic processes, including angiogenesis, tumor growth and metastasis. Polymorphisms of the VEGF gene have been associated with susceptibility to colorectal cancer (CRC). However, the specific association still remains controversial. We made a meta-analysis of the association between VEGF gene polymorphisms and CRC risk. Only eight case-control studies were retrieved, with a total of 2337 CRC patients and 2032 healthy controls.

Introgression lines are some of the most important germplasm for breeding applications and other research conducted on cotton crops. The DNA methylation level among 10 introgression lines of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) and three exotic parental species (G. arboreum, G. thurberi and G. barbadense) were assessed by methylation-sensitive amplified polymorphism (MSAP) technology. The methylation level in the introgression lines ranged from 33.3 to 51.5%.
