Genetic parameters and prediction of genotypic values for root quality traits in cassava using REML/BLUP

E. J. Oliveira, Santana, F. A., Oliveira, L. A., and Santos, V. S., Genetic parameters and prediction of genotypic values for root quality traits in cassava using REML/BLUP, vol. 13, pp. 6683-6700, 2014.

The aim of this study was to estimate the genetic parameters and predict the genotypic values of root quality traits in cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) using restricted maximum likelihood (REML) and best linear unbiased prediction (BLUP). A total of 471 cassava accessions were evaluated over two years of cultivation. The evaluated traits included amylose content (AML), root dry matter (DMC), cyanogenic compounds (CyC), and starch yield (StYi).

Genetic and environmental factors that influence production and quality of milk of Alpine and Saanen goats

L. F. Brito, Silva, F. G., Melo, A. L. P., Caetano, G. C., Torres, R. A., Rodrigues, M. T., and Menezes, G. R. O., Genetic and environmental factors that influence production and quality of milk of Alpine and Saanen goats, vol. 10, pp. 3794-3802, 2011.

Data from 1279 lactations of 783 Alpine and Saanen goats of the herd of our university in Minas Gerais, Brazil, were used to study environmental effects on and to estimate genetic parameters for milk production until 270 days of lactation (MP270) and for production and percentages of fat (PFAT and %FAT), protein (PPROT and %PROT), lactose (PLACT and %LACT), and total dry extract (PEXTR and %EXTR). Environmental effects were estimated by a statistical model that included contemporary group effect, type of kidding, genetic grouping, and kidding order.

Genetic analysis of average annual productivity of Nellore breeding cows (COWPROD)

J. P. Eler, Ferraz, J. B. S., Balieiro, J. C. C., and Mattos, E. C., Genetic analysis of average annual productivity of Nellore breeding cows (COWPROD), vol. 7, pp. 234-242, 2008.

With the aim of estimating the coefficient of heritability of average annual productivity of Nellore cows (COWPROD), a data set from 24,855 animals with known pedigree was analyzed. COWPROD is defined as the amount (in kilograms) of weaned calves produced yearly by one cow during her remaining time in herd ignoring a fixed period of 365 days.

Genetic parameters for productive life traits and reproductive efficiency traits at 6 years in Nellore cattle

J. C. C. Balieiro, Eler, J. P., Ferraz, J. B. S., Mattos, E. C., and Balieiro, C. C., Genetic parameters for productive life traits and reproductive efficiency traits at 6 years in Nellore cattle, vol. 7, pp. 1312-1318, 2008.

The objective of the present study was to estimate (co)variance components for length of productive life (LPL) and some alternative reproductive traits of 6-year-old Nellore cattle. The data set contained 57,410 records for age at first calving from Nellore females and was edited to remove animal records with uncertain paternity and cows with just one piece of calving information. Only animals with age at first calving ranging from 23 to 48 months and calving intervals between 11 and 24 months were kept for analysis. LPL and life production (LP) were used to describe productive life.

Selection and estimation of the heritability of sunflower (Helianthus annuus) pollen collection behavior in Apis mellifera colonies

M. Basualdo, Rodríguez, E. M., Bedascarrasbure, E., and De Jong, D., Selection and estimation of the heritability of sunflower (Helianthus annuus) pollen collection behavior in Apis mellifera colonies, vol. 6, pp. 374-381, 2007.

We selected honey bee colonies (Apis mellifera L.) with a high tendency to collect sunflower pollen and estimated the heritability of this trait. The percentage of sunflower pollen collected by 74 colonies was evaluated. Five colonies that collected the highest percentages of sunflower pollen were selected. Nineteen colonies headed by daughters of these selected queens were evaluated for this characteristic in comparison with 20 control (unselected) colonies.
